Grant Mackenzie

Route 1’s Managing Partner Grant Mackenzie contributes not only a wealth of experience brought from a multi-sport background, but also subject expertise in American collegiate compliance acquired over a seven year period working for a large UK scholarship consultancy.  He spent a successful ten years as a stockbroker and analyst at Barclay’s and National Australia Group, respectively.

His understanding of the compliance aspect of university sports has been built up over a period of time dealing in a wide range of sports with many different universities. From men’s soccer to ten pin bowling, Grant shows a flexible attitude when dealing with clients and their families. Due to his love of sport, he can relate to the individual student-athlete as well as his or her passion for their sport.

Dealing with governing bodies in America (NCAA, NAIA, & NJCAA) has provided Grant with a strong knowledge base and helps Route 1 as an organisation provide a trustworthy and reliable service. Throughout the years Grant has advised student-athletes from all around the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia which has given him a great understanding of international compliance and the school systems from those countries.

Spending time in America and understanding the recruiting tactics of coaches is vital. With five coaching conventions under his belt, Grant has been able to improve and grow knowledge of what a university coach looks for in a recruit.

Nicole Montoya

Route 1’s Managing Partner Nicole Montoya contributes invaluable experience gained from working for a large UK scholarship consultancy for over 3 years, as well as having a competitive sporting background.

A friendly, customer-focused approach is what you will find when meeting Nicole. Her main expertise falls within customer services and client management. She holds an in-depth knowledge of international compliance and criteria required for US universities, athletically and academically. Nicole has advised many families, simplifying the complicated US university entrance process. Nicole provides excellent knowledge on the SAT exam, in particular, which always proves to be a vital resource to our student-athletes.

Nicole was a full scholarship student-athlete for the women’s soccer team at Binghamton University (State University of New York). There she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology while being recognised many times for her efforts on and off the pitch.

Nicole was born and raised in Southern California where her family resides. It is there, within the competitive sports environment, where she learned the values of hard work and the level of commitment required in order to thrive as a college athlete. Since a very young age, Nicole has been awarded multiple accolades which include team MVP’s, captaining her teams, school sports and academic awards, as well as being recognised by her conference, district, and state. These accomplishments continued throughout her collegiate career with the highlight being when she was honoured with the Director’s Award for her outstanding contribution to the Binghamton University athletics program.

Her experience within the American university sports sector has given Nicole a strong foundation to succeed in assisting Route 1’s student-athletes with gaining a scholarship at American universities.

Nicole and Grant are delighted to be working with Jason. He will be responsible for our activities in all countries covered under Asia, Middle East, Turkey and Africa. His sporting and business backgrounds ensure that Jason will be a real asset to the Route 1 brand. After spending time in Dubai with Jason, Managing Partner Grant Mackenzie felt sure that his background and expertise in sport around the world would benefit the company. From 2007 to 2012, Jason was Head of Business Development and Strategy at Qatar Sport Investments owned by the State of Qatar. There he was involved in developing a strong investment portfolio with an asset-base that grew from $2.5 billion to $10 billion during his tenure which also coincided with the economic downturn.

We are hoping to give talented student-athletes from these countries a decent chance to obtain sports scholarships in the USA by working closely with Route 1.”
